The Socialites Electric Cigarette Doncaster Cup 2014 culminated in a historical and royal win, with the Queen’s horse – Estimate – winning the race for the first time since 1970. Jockey Ryan Moore – under the expertise of trainer Sir Michael Stoute and racing advisor John Warren – led Estimate to her esteemed and unexpected victory and scooped a well-deserved prize value of £100,000.
The event – which took place at the St Leger Festival on 12th September – is a Group 2 race for three-year-olds and older horses and run over 2 miles and 2 furlongs (3,600 metres), making it a key race in the QIPCO British Champions Series Long Distance category. Established in 1766, it is Doncaster’s oldest surviving race and along with the Gold Cup at Ascot and the Artemis Goodwood Cup – both feature in the QIPCO British Champions Series – it forms part of the Stayers’ Triple Crown.
Chesterfield-based Socialites has been involved in sponsorship and advertising with their local football league club, however this is the company’s first venture into racing and indeed the first time that an e-cigarette company has been involved in the sport. Socialites have signed an agreement which will see the brand act as the main sponsor for all race meetings over a twelve-month period.
Head of Trade and Retail Marketing Andrew Payne comments: “We couldn’t be more thrilled that the Queen’s horse Estimate won the Socialites Electric Cigarette Doncaster Cup 2014. As a local business, our association with Doncaster races is hugely exciting, and it is a particular honour that the Queen’s horse was the victor of the race which we sponsored.
As a company we’re experiencing rapid growth which means we now have more flexibility with our marketing strategy and we are really proud and excited to be associated with such historic and prominent organizations which appeal to our target demographic. Doncaster has really welcomed us and hopefully we will be doing more in the coming year. I would call it a great brand match and that is why I expect it to work really well for us.”
