Thanks to the multitude of e-liquid flavours available, it’s fair to say that sooner or later you’re likely to come across a flavour you’d prefer to avoid. However, many vapers find themselves repeatedly experiencing a ‘burnt’ taste whenever they inhale – and no matter what they try, it just won’t go away.
In these cases, the culprit will nearly always be a burnt coil. But how does a coil get burnt?
The short answer:
Chain vaping or not having enough e liquid in the tank are common causes of coil damage as the wick does not have time or enough e liquid available to soak up e liquid between puffs. A dry wick due to this will cause your coil to burn.
The long answer:
It’s worth examining how an e-cigarette works. When you refill your tank, the e-liquid is absorbed by a material which we refer to as a ‘wick’ inside the coil head. The wick itself surrounds a coiled element that heats up when an electrical current is passed through it. This, in turn, causes the e-liquid inside the wick to evaporate, allowing us to inhale the resulting vapour. If, however, the wick is not saturated with enough e-liquid when heated, all you will taste is a burning wick. - Your tank is running on empty
A dry wick is not a happy wick. As mentioned previously, your wick needs to be saturated in order to work correctly, and if you are constantly vaping until your tank is empty, the wick will be unable to soak up enough of the residual e-liquid to perform adequately. In order to help your coil head last as long as possible, always top your tank up when it falls to a third of its maximum capacity.
- You chain-vape
For heavy vapers – especially those who enjoy creating thick clouds of vapour – the amount of e-liquid being evaporated outperforms the speed with which your wick can absorb it, even if your tank is full. While there are different gradings of wick material, those within the standard affordable range will require you to slow down a little to allow for maximum saturation.
- Your e-liquid mix is wrong
Vapers who enjoy big plumes of vapour will always favour e-liquids with a high VG (vegetable glycerine) mix – often 70% or more. Sadly, many of the components employed in the manufacturing process of coil heads were designed some years ago, prior to the rise of high VG mixes. Due to the high viscosity of these high-VG e-liquids, and the tightness with which the wick is packed into the coil head, the wick itself can get gunged up, limiting its ability to absorb and consequently burning out.
- You forgot to prime your coil head
When you change your coil head, it cannot be used straight away – it must always be primed. Priming your coil head involves allowing the fresh wick to absorb the e-liquid from the tank – and with a fresh coil head, the majority of people who are constantly asking ‘why do my coils keep burning out?’ are blissfully unaware that this can take anywhere from 5-15 minutes. If you try to take a drag from your e-cigarette before the wick is fully saturated, the heated coil will most likely burn the material – and once the wick is burnt, try as you might, the flavour will always have an unpleasant tang that will not go away until the entire coil head is replaced again.
- Your wick can’t handle the power
Thanks to the rise in custom box mods, e-cigarette users have a plethora of vaping approaches to choose from, with mods ranging in power from 50 watts to as much as 350 watts. While these absurdly high wattages are unnecessary for the majority of users, there are of course enthusiasts who enjoy the ability the crank up the power to create huge clouds. Unfortunately, unless you use high-grade coil heads specifically designed for high power mods, you’re more than likely to find that the wick is unable to take the amount of heat generated and starts to burn – and there are no prizes for guessing where that leads.
So, if you find yourself asking ‘why do my coils keep burning out?’ and you’re guilty of one of the above practices, it may be worth altering your approach to vaping. After all, one of the great things about e-cigarettes is how cheap they are compared to traditional cigarettes. By simply taking better care of the individual components, you will find that you have won’t have to replace your coil heads anywhere near as often, use less e-liquid, and save yourself some money.
